ok, so this new 2D movie from disney underwent some changes for being racist. originally, the story is set in jazzy new orleans with the main character, a black girl named maddy, and she was a chambermaid to rich southern white folk in the 1920s.

the people claimed that 'maddy' was too much of a racist name to give a black girl and make her a chamber maid much less. disney started to get a whole lot of shit at them for making a black girl a chambermaid in the 20s.

so now maddy is no longer maddy, her name is Tiana. and she is no longer a chambermaid, she is... i dunno. she's just some black girl wandering some white people's mansion i guess. and with all these revisions i think goes the chance of disney actually making something truly great.

and who the fuck are these people getting mad that disney made some black girl a maid?!! HELLOO?!!! snow white and cinderella were maids and they were white as fuck! look, disney ALWAYS gives the story to the underdog, showing that through anything, the good guys always win and a beauty could love a beast and a hunchback would no longer be regarded as a freak and a street rat could be a prince.

and wtf, it's okay to call a middle eastern princess 'jasmine' but calling a black maid 'maddy' is too bold?

the story seemed to be so genuinely heartwarming: a young black slave girl becomes a princess after she meets her prince. i mean really, whoudla thunk it huh? on top of racism, there'd be the whole class issue she'd have to overcome as she was a maid. aladdin was a poor bum, mulan was a woman and restricted from alot of things cause she had no penis, ummm... ariel was a mermaid and couldn't walk, lol. even max from 'a goofy movie' was a complete social outcast who proved even losers can become winners.

disney's ALWAYS pretty much made the hero someone you wouldn't expect to be, someone who had the poor unfortunate chance of being born a pauper instead of a prince. and thats the point. but you got these fucking ignorant pissants going, "waaaaaah!!! i can't believe they're taking a black girl set in the 20's to be a slave of some sort!! that stuff would like, NEVER HAPPEN now!! and i don't want my kids seeing that! i don't want them to know it happened!!"

wait, am i missing the point? you sure? why else would they want the black maid concept thrown out the window like it's a rotten egg? was it really that bad and radical of an idea? are kids too dull minded to accept that people were, and still, treated differently for the color of their skin?

you know, most kids could care less mulan was chinese or aladin was arabic or esmerelda was a gypsy or whatever. THEY DON'T CARE. THEY ARE NOT THE ONES COMPLAINING. the audience this movie is aimed at could care less if tiana was black or green or purple. its the stupid parents or some bullshitted FCC comittee that's already deemed that familiar old disney concepts 'rags to riches' theme is 'too much for black people' pretty much.

well most black movies are like that!! remember the titans (i know it's a disney movie, but it wasn't aimed at kids), dreamgirls, glory- all great movies doing with black people trying to beat their oppression! well, in glory they all die... but they died with honor and as an equal to their white commander!

anyways, i had to let that out of my chest. that film didn't need any tampering with the plot as far as i knew. it's not like the black crows from dumbo, for christ'sakes... and those crows were fucking FUNNY!!! lol even though they were blatantly stereotypical black people... but it was a different time back then. i doubt now like they're gonna animate maddy scarfing down as much watermelon and KFC as she can while picking cotton.

EDIT (i'm well aware during that time, new orleans didn't really have slaves. it was a community practically where white people n black people lived together, but seperated. new orleans was mainly filled with french people and they didn't keep the idea of slavery, so it was a segregated community nonetheless. still, i liked the original 'maddy maid' story. XP)

wow... that's quite funny. It's like they're trying to deny what happened in the past.

"Just because no one understands you, doesn't mean you're an artist."
It wasn't "people" in particular -

But the fine folks at BET that found an issue with Maddy's original name and backstory, despite the historical accuracy of it. I don't know how that can be degrading, considering that most black artists don't want to shy away from history or the like, but it's a strange double-standard. People in general, regardless of race, have an issue with facing history as it actually happened instead of just swallowing heroic retellings.

It's sad, but you also have to keep in mind what Disney has to lose if they "risk offending" a large racial group of the US. Yeah it sucks as an art stand point, but as one of the largest companies in the WORLD, it's a savvy business move.

i'll say it straight forward. fuck BET and fuck the NAACP. Disney should tell the story how they originally planned it.

The Sky is my Canvas, a masterpiece in the making.
The following is rated X. It contains sex, violence, gore, nudity, and one way or another I'll probably end up offending you and pissing you off.

What's really weird is that BET is possibly the largest piece of racist shit I have ever seen.

Still, I think the story needs a general re-doing over again. This whole "princess" frinds her "prince charming" is getting a little old. I also think they should do it in harlem during the harlem renaissance.

Most black activists are completely hypocritical, tearing apart everything assuming everything is racist.

Of course, denouncing so many things as racism is obviously racism itself.

If white people make a movie about black slaves, it is racist, if black people make a movie about slaves, it is a testament to their ancestors.

I'm white as hell, but I grew up in Fontana, a primarily mexican/ black city, with a couple handfuls of white trash mixed in too.

Being in SoCal, the biggest melting pot next to New York, I feel I have the right to say whatever I want about racism really, after experiencing almost every side of the argument.

After shows like maury and jerry springer, I don't understand how ANY race can feel superior to another.

YOU ARE ALL IDIOTS BEGGING FOR GREATNESS.

We are all the same species, and until everyone can suck it up and stop using race, sex, religion, culture and politics as excuses for hate, rage and war, then we are all headed for extinction.
i know, disney has to play it safe. ><;; which is a shame, you'd think a company that big and influential can get away with some of this stuff, but it's also because of how big they are they gotta stay super safe.

i mean, the original draft of this movie wasn't anything offensive in the least! i know it was typical 'maid becomes a lady then a princess' dealie, so i don't think when applying it to a black girl made much of a difference. when i first read about it i was like, 'cool, it's a 2D cartoon and now they got it set to hot jazz music. awesome.' and i figured nearly everyone got the same notion. >< yeah, disney's doing a black princess character. but i didn't see this much hubbub over the first arabic princess in a disney movie, the first native american princess in a disney movie, the first chinese herione in a disney movie. and when i think fo that, i realize this has less to do with any intellectual thinking and BET just making noise.
